🛋️ Home & furnitureHow to remove fabric sofa stains

Check the cleaning code first · little water, blot it out

Fabric sofa covers often can't be removed, and there's foam inside, so using lots of water soaks it through and it won't dry properly. Before thinking about the type of stain, check the sofa's cleaning code; the basic method is to use a little water at a time and blot the stain out.

🔬 Why this order works

If the cushion gets wet inside, dissolved residue rises to the surface as it dries and leaves a round water ring, and if it stays damp for long, mold grows. On the label, W means water-based cleaner is OK, S means solvent-based cleaner only, WS means either, and X means vacuum only.

🧺 Step by step

Tap a step when it's done to tick it off.

🧰 By material

① Light fabric

Rings show easily, so clean a little wider than the stain and feather out the edges lightly. Tap any remaining color with diluted oxygen bleach, but test it first.

② Dark fabric & microfiber

Detergent easily leaves white marks, so use very little and wipe thoroughly with clean water. Don't use bleach.

③ Leather & velvet

Water flattens velvet pile and easily leaves marks, so only go as far as blotting and leave the rest to a professional cleaner. For leather, see the leather entry.

🚫 Don't

  • Pouring on water or soaking it with a spray bottle — the foam inside gets wet, leading to water rings and mold.
  • Using water and detergent on a sofa with cleaning code S or X.
  • Rushing the drying with a hair dryer's heat.

⏳ If it has already dried

For an old stain, let detergent suds sit on it for about 10 minutes, then tap and blot. If you know what the stain is, follow that entry but use less water. If a water ring has formed, the whole face of the cushion has to be cleaned evenly for the edge to disappear, so a professional cleaner is the safer choice.

💡 Tip

Putting on a washable sofa cover is the easiest prevention.

❓ Common questions

What if there's no label?

Asking the retailer or manufacturer is the surest way. If you can't find out, use very little water and test on a hidden spot, and only go ahead if there's no color loss or water mark.

Can I use a steam cleaner?

Protein stains like blood and milk set with heat, and depending on the fabric it can shrink or damage the pile. Use one only if the cleaning code and manufacturer's instructions allow it.
